Introduction of new Out of Bounds areas to the course

The Club Committee have decided to extend the areas of ‘Out of Bounds’ to include all external course boundary fences on the course. This is an extension to the existing ‘OOB’ areas and covers external fences only. There will continue to be no internal ‘OOB’ on the course.
WHEN:
The new OOB areas will come into play on the 4th of April 2024

HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOU:
The new ‘OOB’ areas will have no effect on you provided you keep your ball within the external boundary fences!
  1. If your ball finishes outside the external boundary fence it is deemed out of bounds and you must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing a ball from where the previous stroke was made
  2. If you are unsure if your ball has finished ‘OOB’, you should play a provisional ball.
  3. If your ball comes to rest Inside the OOB course boundary fence but is adjacent to the fence the following applies:
    1. You may play the ball as it lies
    2. You may declare your ball unplayable and take relief using one of the 3 options for an unplayable ball and adding one additional penalty stroke.
INTERNAL BOUNDARY FENCES;
There is no change to the rules when your ball finishes adjacent to an internal fence. You may take relief as normal without penalty on the side of the fence where your ball lies, when the fence physically interferes with the player’s area of intended stance or area of intended swing provided HOWEVER There is no relief under Rule 16.1:
  • When playing the ball as it lies is clearly unreasonable because of something from which the player is not allowed to take free relief (such as when a player is unable to make a stroke because of where the ball lies in a bush), or
  • When interference exists only because a player chooses a club, type of stance or swing or direction of play that is clearly unreasonable under the circumstances.

Surrounded by historic sites and the famous race course, golf has been played at the Curragh since 1852.

The golf course is situated on land which has been uncultivated since prehistoric times, allowing for the development of the exceptional heathland conditions.
